Toxic stress from ACEs such as poverty, violence, and emotional or physical abuse can cause wear and tear on all body systems. In fact, ACEs are associated with increased risk for heart disease, cancer, accidents, respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease, and suicide.
