Treating Osteoarthritic Pain: A Case Discussion

Needs Statement

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the United States. The aging population and obesity epidemic will likely increase the number of people affected with symptomatic OA. As the population ages and the prevalence of OA continues to rise, clinicians find themselves struggling to manage pain and restore function associated with these conditions. This case-based activity goes beyond first line treatment to discuss various pharmacological options available, emerging treatment options and criteria to help individualize care.

Learning Objective

After participating in this activity, learners should be able to:

u  Confidently assess and manage patients with OA

u  Choose appropriate pharmacological treatments for patients with OA when indicated

u  Individualize treatment of patients with OA considering various co-morbidities

Target Audience

This activity is designed for primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and other primary care team members.

Faculty Biography:

Cheri L. Olson, MD is Medical Director for the Interstate Postgraduate Medical Association and recently retired as Director of the La Crosse –Mayo Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Olson, a family physician, has been extensively involved in quality improvement performance, scholarship and leadership in her state, region and in her institution both in the hospital and clinic settings.  She is a frequently invited speaker and especially enjoys presenting group American Board of Family Practice Self-Assessment Modules.  She enjoyed overhearing a patient tell another that she is “not like other doctors, she’s really down to earth”, and another patient tell her that she likes that she is not a young doctor! Olson is married to an allergist and has 3 children.

Faculty Biography:

Julie Theriault, PA-C is the lead Physician Assistant for Sutter Medical Group (SMG) in Sacramento, CA. She received her BS in Biology (Concentration in Clinical Laboratory Technology, Minor in Chemistry), her certificate as Primary Care Physician Assistant from the University of California, Davis School of Medicine and completed her PA Graduate Geriatric Medicine Program at Stanford University.  Julie is an active leader in the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), having served as Past President of AAPA and Past President of the California Academy of Physician Assistants (CAPA). She also currently serves on the Sutter Medical Group Benefits Committee and Philanthropic Committee.

Faculty Biography:

Wendy Wright, DNP received her Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2019 from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.  She is a 1992 graduate of the Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts and completed a family nurse practitioner post-master’s program in 1995.  She is an adult and family nurse practitioner and the owner of two, nurse practitioner owned and operated clinics within New Hampshire named: Wright & Associates Family Healthcare.  Her family practices have won numerous awards, including Top Providers in New Hampshire 2018, Top 20 Fastest Growing Family Business, and Top 20 Women-Owned Business in New Hampshire.  In addition, she is the Owner of Partners in Healthcare Education, a medical education company.  She is the Past President of NPACE and the Senior lecturer for Fitzgerald Health Education Associates.
