Obesity Care Reimagined
Obesity Care Reimagined engages brief case studies to explore three elements of treatment planning for obesity and comorbidities. Each section should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
Part 1: Obesity in the Context of Liver and Kidney Disease
We will explore the foundational understanding of obesity as a chronic disease and its critical associations with comorbidities such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), and cardiovascular disease.
Part 2: Obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnea
We will explore individualized treatment planning for obesity management in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and those experiencing challenges with pharmacological therapy.
Part 3: Obesity and Evolving Treatment Goals
We will explore treatment response assessment and long-term optimization strategies in obesity pharmacotherapy. This activity will review evidence-based approaches to evaluating treatment success beyond weight metrics, dose adjustment protocols for quality-of-life optimization, and how evolving treatment goals throughout the patient journey require adaptive clinical decision-making and patient-centered communication strategies.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, learners should be able to:
- Apply effective patient-centered communication and shared decision-making strategies to support long-term obesity management and treatment adherence
- Develop individualized treatment plans for obesity management, integrating evidence-based guidelines, pharmacological therapies, and lifestyle modifications with consideration of comorbidities
- Recognize the health impacts of obesity and its interconnections with comorbidities, including MASLD, MASH, and cardiovascular disease
Target Audience:
This activity is designed for family medicine physicians, and other primary care team members.

Cultural/Linguistic Competency:
CAFP policy and California state law requires that each learning activity have elements of cultural and linguistic proficiency included in the content. The definition of cultural and linguistic competency is the ability and readiness of health care providers and health organizations to humbly and respectfully demonstrate, effectively communicate, and tailor delivery of care to patients with diverse values, beliefs, identities, and behaviors, in order to meet patients’ social, cultural, and linguistic needs as it relates to patient health. This activity meets these requirements.
Implicit Bias:
CAFP policy and California state law requires that all CME activities comprising a patient care element include either (1) examples of how implicit bias affects perceptions and treatment decisions of physicians and surgeons, leading to disparities in health outcomes and/or (2) strategies to address how unintended biases in decision-making may contribute to health care disparities by shaping behavior and producing differences in medical treatment along lines of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics. This activity meets these requirements.
