CAFP Town Hall on MICRA

This is a recording of the CAFP town hall meeting on MICRA, which was held on May 25. The town hall discussed and answered member questions on Assembly Bill 35, the deal to modernize California’s Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act’s (MICRA).

Moderator:  Lauren Simon, MD, MPH, FAAFP, CAFP President

Lauren Simon, MD, is a family physician practicing in Loma Linda in San Bernardino County. Dr. Simon is currently a Professor of Family Medicine and Director of Primary Care Sports Medicine at Loma Linda University, and the Assistant Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Loma Linda-Inland Empire Consortium for Healthcare Education. She also is a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the University of California, Riverside.

Dr. Simon is the current President of the CAFP Board of Directors and is a Past-President of the Riverside-San Bernardino Academy of Family Physicians. She is a previous honoree of the 2016 Hero of Family Medicine Award, honoring a CAFP member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to advocate for patients, colleagues and the family medicine specialty. She has also been honored with the CAFP Foundation Educator of the Year award, receiving the Barbara Harris Award for Excellence in Education.

Jack Chou, MD, FAAFP, CAFP Past President

Jack Chou, MD, is a Partner of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG) and is the Regional Chair for Health Information Management and Regional Co-Chair for Scanning Oversight Committee at Southern California Permanente Medical Group (2008- Present). 

Dr. Chou embraces leadership at all levels – local, state and national – for the communities of which he is a part of and been recognized for his commitment and leadership on numerous occasions. In 2015, he was named SCPMG Regional Family Physician of the Year. In 2011, he was awarded Physician of the Year and the Service Extraordinaire Award by Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center. He was also named Philanthropist of the Year by the California Academy of Family Physicians Foundation in 2006.

Lisa Maas, Executive Director of Californians Allied for Patient Protection (CAPP)

Lisa Maas is the Executive Director of CAPP.  She joined CAPP in 2006 with 20 years of diversified legal experience with particular expertise in litigation, insurance, corporate law and board governance. She spent 15 years as Chief Legal Officer and Vice President for the California Dental Association and the Dentists Insurance Company and served as a CAPP board member since the organization’s inception in 1991. Lisa earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her law degree from the University of Southern California.
