Strategies for Disrupting Implicit Bias and Structural Racism in Medical Education

Interview season is just around the corner! Program Directors, faculty, residents and staff will be focused on assessing and recruiting the best trainees for their programs. With that, let's take a look at strategies to remove bias from the recruitment process as well as in medical education.

Pre-work: Please complete the Harvard Implicit Association Test (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html) and select "RACE IAT". 

Learning Objectives:

After attending this session, learners should be able to:

  • Recognize how implicit bias and structural racism affect our assessment, recruitment and retention of trainees and the delivery of trainee medical education.
  • Describe key definitions and concepts of implicit bias, levels of racism, and the connection between implicit bias and structural racism.
  • List strategies to interrupt implicit bias and structural racism in medical education and work toward a more diverse healthcare workforce.
