Understanding Obesity Management Through the Lens of Cultural Humility
When people with obesity are provided with evidence-based treatment such as intensive behavioral therapy, medications, or bariatric surgery, they are able to lose weight and may be able to sustain that weight loss. This activity uses case studies, video and self-assessment to help you foster more meaningful patient partnerships for sustainable weight through evidence-based interventions. In addition to pharmacotherapy, lifestyle medicine and cases for referral, we will explore how to navigate cultural nuances and communication strategies in order to develop personalized care plans, ensuring optimal, person-centered health promotion.
Learning Objectives:
After this course, participants should be able to:
- Employ evidence-based guidelines to screen for and diagnose the disease of obesity
- Apply the 5 Rs and integrate cultural humility to improve physician-patient interaction
- Apply patient-centered techniques to engage and create personalized management plans for patients with obesity
- Discuss the mechanism of action, efficacy and safety of approved pharmacotherapies and those in late-stage development for obesity
- Discuss criteria to identify patients who would benefit from a referral to an obesity specialist

This activity meets these requirements.
Implicit Bias:
CAFP policy and California state law requires that all CME activities comprising a patient care element include either (1) examples of how implicit bias affects perceptions and treatment decisions of physicians and surgeons, leading to disparities in health outcomes and/or (2) strategies to address how unintended biases in decision-making may contribute to health care disparities by shaping behavior and producing differences in medical treatment along lines of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics. This activity meets these requirements.
