Opioid and Substance Use Disorders in Special Populations: Youth and Young Adult Athletes

This activity is part of CAFP's California Residency Program Collaborative around improving education, outreach and treatment for patients with substance use disorder disease, including stimulants and opioids, with a focus on medication assisted treatment options. 

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, learners should be able to:

  • Discuss Opioid use Disorder(OUD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in special populations: youth/young adults.
  • Address SUD in youth and young adult/collegiate athletes.
  • Discuss laws the treating physician should know regarding opioid and other “scheduled substances.”
  • List regulatory and testing agencies for substance use/overuse in collegiate and national sport athletes and implications for treating physicians.
